Career Pathways are a network of structured and connected education programs and support services that enable participants, often while they are working, to grow towards a specific career and higher levels of education and training.
The Youth One Stop encourages the career pathways model with its participants. Each step on a career pathway is designed to strategically prepare youth to progress to the next level of employment and create channels of growth for those unemployed or underemployed. This model thus helps produce a steady supply of skilled workers for local employers.
Recently, a group of Youth One Stop participants were interested in becoming Pharmacy Technicians and attended a series of shadow days at a local Walgreen’s Pharmacy, where they spent the day learning the routines of a pharmacy.
Following their shadow day, the youths had the opportunity to enroll in Dutchess Community College’s Pharmacy Technician class. This eight-week course covers topics such as pharmacy-specific medical terminology, reading and interpreting prescriptions, and defining drugs by generic and brand names.
During the class the youth also can participate in a work experience opportunity in a pharmacy. By gaining practical experience, the students are more likely to be employed following graduation from the course.
This is just one of many such opportunities the Youth One Stop programs helps participants take advantage of. If your business is interested in hosting a youth for a job shadow or work experience day, please call (845) 454-1700, ext. 1053.
